Daffodils

November 4, 2021 by Nick

A few years ago a group of us planted bulbs around the pond area and down Bears Road to brighten up our village in Spring time.

Following on that success many residents have this last week or two been given bulbs to plant on their particular banks and grassy areas all over the village and also at Stow Hill by the windmill.  This has been under the auspices of the Parish Council and the unofficial Paston Community Group.

The restoration and conservation of the wall paintings by Tom Organ and is team from Arte Conservation is nearing completion.   This will be celebrated by a lecture and guide to the paintings by Tom with wine and refreshments the evening of Wednesday 10th November at 7.30 pm.

Do come – Paston residents, we have an important piece of heritage right here in our village and this is a chance to learn more about it.

Then on Monday 15th November the contractors are due to start work on the re – ordering of the church and installation of facilities to make it into a venue for events of all kinds, as it would have been  in the middle ages.

Paston Church project

September 17, 2021 by Nick

St Margaret’s, our village church is particularly fine and is important because of its association with the medieval Paston family whose letters give a picture of life in the 1400’s, and because of its wall paintings.

The wall paintings restoration is now under way under the direction of Tom Organ and his team. The paintings are of St Christopher carrying the young Jesus over a river, to look at which was said to protect you from harm for the rest of the day, and the three hunting noblemen encountering three skeletons “this is how we all end up”  Additionally  an angel with curly hair was discovered only 8 years ago and the team are exploring what other paintings may be there still hidden.

And,  after many years planning, fund raising and obtaining the necessary permissions work is due shortly to start on the installation of wash room and kitchen and moving pews and font to create a space at the rear of the church.  It’s hoped work will start next year, but there are problems with busy builders and shortages and escalating prices of materials.

The planning had been done by a steering group comprising members of the Parish Council, the Church Council and the Heritage Society.

Covid-19 village support

March 21, 2020 by Nick

Saturday, 21 March 2020

Dear Paston resident,

We hope you are well and staying positive!

At Christmas it was unimaginable to think that by March the world would be gripped by this unprecedented crisis.

Over the coming days, weeks and months, it’s likely that some of our community will be required to self-isolate – some we know are already doing so.

Let’s help each other, as best we can, to get through this period of anxiety, uncertainty and potential loneliness.

Please think about the needs of your neighbours, especially (but not exclusively) the elderly and vulnerable.

Vulnerable people include:

  • People living alone.
  • Women that are pregnant.
  • The aged or infirm.
  • People with high blood pressure, heart condition, cancer, diabetes, low-immunity, etc.
  • Single parents that may need support if the parent falls ill.
  • Families that have lost an income.

Please give them a call or knock on their door to check they are OK.

  • Please remind them to drink plenty of fluids.
  • Make sure they have food and other essential items
  • Check whether they need help with shopping
  • Check whether they need help picking up prescriptions
  • Make sure they have your phone number(s).

Remember to:

  • Wash your hands before you go. Don’t make bodily contact
  • Stand 3 meters away.
  • If possible always go in pairs to help.
  • Do not enter peoples properties without an invitation to do so.
  • Avoid handling cash and provide a receipt for goods bought.
  • Make sure the person you are helping knows the limits to your assistance.
  • Wash your hands again!

Keep up to date and stay in contact at our new Paston Parish Council Facebook page (search for “Paston Parish Council”)

Do you need assistance?

If you are self-isolating and do not have help from anyone else, please contact us and we will find a way to get help to you.

Road safety in the village

January 8, 2020 by Nick

Your parish council are keeping at it.  You will have noticed a warning sign for children crossing.

And thanks to grants from the gas terminal companies negotiated by Boo Tumber we are shortly going to have an automated sign to tell passing vehicles how fast they are going and, if appropriate, to slow down.  The sign will have a unit to record speeds of all passing vehicles which we hope may help persuade the County Council to make the limit 30 mph through the village.
